Monaco flag Monaco GP: Thursday Practice Report

FIRST PRACTICE - MS TAKES FIRST MONACO FREE

Michael Schumacher reigned supreme in the opening practice session at Monaco this morning, the German setting a 1:21.094 as he evaluated tyres and set ups for Sunday’s race.

Birthday boy Barrichello was ahead of his Ferrari team-mate again after 2nd practice
Conditions were fine but there were damp patches from overnight rain and some drivers ventured out with intermediate tyres. It did not take long for the circuit to dry completely however and all runners eventually changed to dry grooves.

David Coulthard was second in his McLaren and looked good, setting a time just under three tenths slower than Schumacher and completing 17 laps. Renault also looked solid, with Jarno Trulli setting the third best time, followed by Ferrari number two and birthday boy Rubens Barrichello who improved his time late in the piece and demoted Arrows veteran Heinz-Harald Frentzen to fifth.

BAR’s Jacques Villeneuve, who finished last year’s Monaco Grand Prix in the points, was sixth, followed by team-mate Olivier Panis, Jenson Button, and Kimi Raikkonen, who spun and damaged his McLaren Mercedes at Rascasse.

The day started well for Villeneuve but he slipped to 14th position by the end
BMW-Williams pilot Ralf Schumacher was 10th, ahead of last year’s podium man Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar, and Allan McNish, who did well as he took to the circuit for the first time.

Felipe Massa, also a Monaco rookie, was 13th in the Sauber Petronas, followed by Mika Salo, Mark Webber, Juan-Pablo Montoya, and Takuma Sato.

Sauber’s German driver Nick Heidfeld was 18th, followed by Enrique Bernoldi, and Alex Yoong.

Jaguar’s Pedro de la Rosa crashed his R3 near the Swimming Pool section leaving him in 21st, while Jordan’s Giancarlo Fisichella was last having suffered technical problems with his machine.

SECOND PRACTICE - A TRULLI RAPID TIME

Renault’s Jarno Trulli put in a sensational time to finish fastest in an eventful second practice session at Monte Carlo this afternoon.

Allan McNish had plenty to smile about after taking second place in Thursday practice
The Italian Renault Sport driver blitzed home to take the top time in the final stages of the session from Toyota’s very quick learning Allan McNish who finished with a 1:19.361.

The session was stopped not long after the start when Minardi’s Alex Yoong slammed his Asiatech powered car rearward into the barriers at Rascasse. It got underway but soon after Eddie Irvine lost his car on the oil left by the Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi at Casino and also crashed rearward into the barriers. Both men were unhurt.

David Coulthard continued McLaren’s good practice run with third fastest in his MP4/17, just ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella who came back from his mechanical problems of this morning to set a competitive 1:19.680.

Toyota showed that it meant business with McNish’s team-mate Mika Salo taking the fifth best time, followed by BMW-Williams man Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello. Minardi’s Mark Webber also learnt the ropes quickly in his PS02, taking a sensational eighth best time, a 1:20.028.

Juan-Pablo Montoya in the second BMW-Williams was ninth, ahead of Jenson Button who had an incident packed session. Early he suffered a shredded tyre and then late in the session thumped the Armco.

To the surprise of the paddock Mark Webber planted his Minardi easily into the top ten
This morning’s pacesetter Michael Schumacher was 11th, the German content to improve only slightly so he could conserve his tyres.

BAR’s Olivier Panis was 12th, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Jacques Villeneuve, and the Sauber twins Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa.

Takuma Sato in the Jordan was 17th, ahead of Pedro de la Rosa, Kimi Raikkonen who had problems and could only complete six laps, and Eddie Irvine.

Bernoldi was 21st followed by Yoong.
