FIRST PRACTICE - FERRARI OPENS SPANISH ACCOUNT
Ferrari initiated early control at the Circuit De Catalunya today, with Michael Schumacher topping the timesheets ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello.
Schumacher was in control all through practice

In mild but patchy conditions teams ventured out on to the Barcelona track in the session traditionally used for race set-up, preliminary balance evaluations and tyre compound assessments. Schumacher was solid in his F2002, setting a 1:20.681 and completing 11 laps.
Barrichello’s time was six hundredths slower and the Brazilian completed 10 laps as part of his settling in and tyre testing.
Ferrari’s control over proceedings was demonstrated by the gap to third place man, Sauber’s Felipe Massa, who finished with a 1:21.364, six tenths slower than Schumacher.
McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen was the highest Michelin runner in the McLaren-Mercedes, the Finn ensuring he got his work started early in a bid to give the embattled McLaren a good start to the weekend. The youngster was followed by Jarno Trulli in the similarly shod Renault, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Arrows Cosworth.
David Coulthard, having emerged late in the session, was seventh fastest with a time 1.1 seconds slower than the pacesetter. The Scotsman was working hard trying to refine the balance of his MP4/17.
Takuma Sato's Spanish GP didn't start well after he missed the first session

Nick Heidfeld was eighth in the other Sauber Petronas, followed by Jordan’s Giancarlo Fisichella and Arrows’ number two Enrique Bernoldi.
Renault’s young gun Jenson Button came in 11th quickest, ahead of the slow-starting BMW-Williams of Ralf Schumacher who set a time 1.5 seconds slower than his brother. Team-mate Juan-Pablo Montoya was back in 15th, and with clearly plenty of work to do later today.
BAR’s Olivier Panis was 13th, Toyota’s Mika Salo 14th, while Jaguar’s Pedro de la Rosa took the 16th best time in the problematic R3 contender. He was followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Eddie Irvine, Alan McNish, and Mark Webber.
Alex Yoong had an eventful session as he found the limits of adhesion, running off the track and bringing out the yellow flags. He was in 21st position with a 1:24.598.
Jordan’s Takuma Sato failed to complete any laps having suffered a technical problem which brought him to a halt just metres from the pit lane exit.

Michael Schumacher remained the fastest man on track at Barcelona today having bettered his morning time by three tenths, and finished the day’s running with a 1:20.380 and with 45 laps in the bank.
But the leaderboard was not all Ferrari at the top with Barrichello not improving his earlier mark, enabling Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the fuel-light Arrows Cosworth to finish second quickest with a 1:20.450. The 34-year-old from Moenchengladbach completed 26 laps for the day.
Renault’s Jenson Button also progressed from this morning’s trials finishing third quickest in the R202, ahead of Barrichello and BAR’s Olivier Panis who got in plenty of work for the day, finishing with the most laps of all the runners. Frentzen’s team-mate Enrique Bernoldi was sixth quickest in the A21 followed by McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa, and Jordan’s Jarno Trulli.
Jaguar’s Eddie Irvine made some small steps from this morning by finishing tenth with a 1:21.294, while McLaren’s Scottish driver David Coulthard was 12th. He did improve on his earlier mark but also had some issues with his car that needed sorting out.
It wasn't the best of days for either of the Williams drivers

Nick Heidfeld in the second Sauber finished 13th quickest, ahead of Jordan’s Takuma Sato, the young Japanese managing to get out on the track for the first time after a sensor problem kept him from running this morning.
BMW-Williams again did not shine in the session, with Ralf Schumacher 15th fastest, the German posting a 1:21.409. BAR’s Jacques Villeneuve was 16th, followed by Schumacher’s Colombian team-mate Juan-Pablo Montoya.
Toyota’s point scorer Mika Salo finished with the 18th best time, followed by local hero Pedro de la Rosa in the other Jaguar, Mark Webber, Alan McNish, and again at the back, Alex Yoong.
