Rain during Silverstone testing
Posted 29 May 2002

Testing at the Silverstone circuit began yesterday under somewhat messy conditions. However, Giancarlo Fisichella (Jordan) made the most out of it and he set the fastest time of the day.

The Italian was good on form and his time was almost a second quicker than that of his nearest rival. Surprisingly Andre Lotterer took 2nd in his first ever Jaguar R3 appearance, just ahead of Ferrari's Luca Badoer, who was sent to Britain as this is the final test on this track before the Grand Prix event in a couple of weeks.

Felipe Massa managed to set the 5th fastest time of the day. 'It was good to be back in the cockpit so soon after Monaco, but irritating that the running I did was interrupted frequently by red flags as several people spun,' he commented. 'The track was still wet so I ran on intermediate tires all through, and I became one of the spinners when I pushed a little bit too hard on my last lap without damaging the car.'

This was not the only incident of the day as Toyota's tester Stephane Sarrazin came off the track as well: 'Unfortunately I had a spin towards the end of the session. I do not know how it happened, but it resulted in some damage to the car.' His team-mate Ryan Briscoe had a better day: 'We got some good work done on traction control and also on mechanical set-up.'

Several drivers had off track excursions, but that was nothing unusual under these bad conditions. At least Michelin made the most out of the situation, trying to gain more experience under such conditions. The French tyre manufacturer had nine drivers running yesterday.

Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were in action for Williams, but they didn't get too much running in after their busy Monaco weekend.
