RB tops day two at Silverstone
Posted 30 May 2002

The Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello topped the times on the second day of the pre-Canadian Grand Prix test campaign at Silverstone on Wednesday.

In conditions more conducive to decent development than rain-hit Tuesday, the Brazilian Barrichello set a 1:22.071 on the way to completing 47 laps. His focus was on finding a good set-up for Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix on July 7 while also getting some running in ahead of Canada. Ferrari has also been working at Monza in Italy this week doing set-up work for Montreal, working on brake testing and high-speed aerodynamic running.

Two-tenths behind Barrichello was McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, followed by team-mate David Coulthard. The Woking boys were working on set-up work and tyre evaluations for Michelin.

Jaguar-Racing’s Eddie Irvine was fourth in the R3 contender, the Ulsterman running in the morning before handing over the reins over to the Australian James Courtney, who had been drafted in for the talent run and finished last on the timesheets with a 1:28.630 and 29 laps. Irvine’s team-mate Pedro de la Rosa also had a run in the car, completing nine laps and setting the 17th best time ahead of Courtney.

BMW-Williams saw Ralf Schumacher finish fifth, but team-mate Juan-Pablo Montoya’s running was interrupted by a blown engine. It was a worrying sign for BMW after the Colombian also suffered the same problem during the last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. He ended up tenth on the leader board, but the engine failure restricted him to just 16 laps.

In sixth was Renault’s Jenson Button, followed by team-mate Jarno Trulli, BAR Honda’s Jacques Villeneuve, Arrows’ Enrique Bernoldi, and then Montoya.

Jordan’s Takuma Sato was 11th in the EJ11, ahead of the sole Sauber runner Felipe Massa and Sato’s partner Giancarlo Fisichella.

The Toyota team spent the morning in the garages before venturing onto the circuit after lunch, and saw Allan McNish take 14th and Mika Salo 15th.

Patrick Lemarie, one of BAR’s four development drivers, was 16th in the 03-Honda, ahead of De la Rosa and Courtney.

Testing continues today.
