JB eager to stay with "Regie"
Posted 31 May 2002

Jenson Button, the former rookie of the year, has said he wants to stay at Renault Sport next year.

The Briton is serving the final year of a loan agreement with Renault from Williams F1, which has the Briton on a long-term contract. The Grove team has an option on his services at the expiry of his Renault deal, but he can stay with his current employer if Renault decides to keep him and negotiate an extension to the loan contract.

So far this year he has been a solid contributor for Renault, with eight points in seven races including three successive points finishes in Malaysia, Brazil, and San Marino earlier this year.

And with Renault continuing to make progress in its first year of competition as a works manufacturer, Button wants to remain with the team as it makes steps towards the top of the pecking order.

‘I've been pleased with my performances and certainly it would be nice to stay with Renault,’ the 22-year-old said in an interview with UK weekly “Motorsport News”.

‘They are clearly moving up the grid and in the next few years it is not impossible that they could be challenging Ferrari.

‘It's not good to keep chopping and changing teams. At McLaren, Ferrari and Williams they have kept their driver line-ups for a couple of years. When you swap teams you have new people and a new car and it takes a while to get used to the way of working.’
